Claim of editor-in-chief of Azadlyg newspaper submitted to European Court

28 October 2008 [16:37] - TODAY.AZ
The claim of the editor-in-chief of Azadlyg newspaper Ganimat Zahid, held in correctional facility No 17 has been sent to the European Court of Human Rights, said journalist's defender Elchin Sadikhov.
He said they received the copies of the verdict of the Supreme court and transferred all necessary documents to the European court.

"The appeal sent to the European court states the unfair conduction of trials, unfounded arrest of the editor-in-chief G.Zahid and violation of articles 5 and 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights", said Sadikhov.

It should be noted that on March 7 the Yasamal district court of Baku, presided by judge Sudaba Mamedova, passed a verdict on editor-in-chief of Azadlyg opposition newspaper Ganimat Zahid and Baku resident Vusal Hasanov.

The verdict found Ganimat Zahid guilty of hooliganism and sentenced him to 4 years in prison and Vusal Hasanov to 1.5 years. The Baku Appellate Court and the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the first court instance.
