As of October 1 of this year the population of Azerbaijan makes 8,600,000 people, reports Day.Az with reference to the State Statistical Committee of Azerbaijan.

By the information, the population of the country grew 69,000 people (0.8%) through nine months of the year.
Of them 4,501,000 (51.7%) live in the cities and 4,198,000 (48.3%) in villages.
Men make up 49% of the country's population and women 51%. By statistics, 1,000 men account for 1,027 women.
The age structure of the population is as follows:
- 0-14 - 23%
- 15-64 - 70%
- 65 and older - 7%.
Youth at the age from 14 to 29 years old makes 31.2% of the population.
The average age of the population makes 32 and the life span is 72.4 years, including 69.1 among men and 75.1 among women.
In period of January-September of 2008 107,900 children were born in Azerbaijan, including 53.6% boys and 46.4% girls.
Of them 1,110 are twins and 18 are triplets.
Women, giving birth to illegitimate children, make 10% of the total number of birthing women.
The most popular names among boys were Ali, Murad, Mehemmed, Huseyn, Nihad and among girls Fatima, Narmin, Fidan, Zahra and Nuray.
As compared to the same period of 2007, the number of new-born children per each 1000 people dropped from 17.4 to 16.8 and death rate among them from 6.4 to 6.2.
