Appeal of editor-in-chief of Tolshi sado newspaper, charged with high treason, accepted for consideration

The Baku Appellate Court has accepted for consideration the appeal of Novruzali Mamedov, editor-in-chief of Tolshi sado and chief of department of the Institute for Language Studies of the National Academy of Science, against the decision of the Court of Grave Crimes, said a source from the Appellate Court.

Reports say that the appeal will be considered under the chair of judge Sahibkhan Mirzoyev. The court hearing on the case was scheduled for October 2.

The appeal states the need to pass a verdict of not guilty.

It should be noted that by the court's verdict, Novruzali Mamedov was recognized guilty under article 274 (high treason) and sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment, while Elchin Guliyev, working with the same newspaper was sentenced to 6 years under the same article.

Novruzali Mamedov was detained on February 3 of 2007. The Yasamal district court passed a decision to sentence him to 15 days. On February 17, the chief of department faced charges under article 274 (high treason) of the Criminal Code. Elman Quliyev is charged under the same article.
