45 prisoners die of tuberculosis in Azerbaijan last year

Members of the Public Committee for Control over the Penitentiary System of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Justice held a monitoring in the Medical center for detainment of prisoners, suffering from tuberculosis.

The due announcement was made by one of the committee members, human rights activist Chingiz Ganizade.

He said 950 prisoners, suffering from tuberculosis, receive treatment here.

"76 people suffer from complicated tuberculosis. Tuberculosis was revealed in 44 persons while they were free", said Ganizade.

The human rights activist noted that of them three are women and 11 are lifers.

"157 prisoners died of tuberculosis in Azerbaijan in 2003 and 45 in 2007", said Ganizade.

He said they examined the medicine store.

"The medical center is provided with advanced equipment and has all conditions for treatment of tuberculosis", he concluded.
