Human rights activist Taisiya Gordeyeva intending to hold monitoring of imprisoned servicemen

29 January 2008 [13:42] - TODAY.AZ
Human rights activist Taisiya Gordeyeva intends to put forward an official proposal to human rights activists this week.

Taisiya Gordeyeva, deputy chairman of the Committee of Soldiers' Mothers, told Day.Az she will present proposals to hold a joint monitoring of the housing conditions of imprisoned servicemen and to consider their cases, to Arzu Abdullayeva, Saida Gojamanly and Novella Jafaroglu.

"I think servicemen are the most vulnerable group of prisoners. These are 18-19 year old guys, charged with desertion and other deadly sins. At present 2600 soldiers accused of desertion are in jail.

Nobody defends them, unlike the political prisoners. At the same time, the soldiers, who are declared deserters, want to serve in the army! We do not have deserters. They escape not from the military service but from being humiliated by officers and from unbearable conditions", she says.
