Journalists hold protest rally

24 April 2007 [15:32] - TODAY.AZ
A group of journalists held a rally in protest against the arrest of Eynulla Fatullayev, editor-in-chief of "Gundalik Azerbaijan" and "Realniy Azerbaijan" newspapers.

Though the protest action is planned to be held in Sabir park, it took place in the Icharishar (Old city) in the end.

Slogans "Freedom of expression!", "Release Eynulla!" and "Freedom!" were sounded by 50 protesters during the action. The chief editor of the "Gundalik Azerbaijan" newspaper protested against the arrest of Eynulla Fatullayev and claimed the editor of the newspaper Uzeyir Hajibayov was subject to an assassination.

At the end, a resolution of the rally was declared. The resolution called for soon approval of law on defamation, arrest of Elmar Huseynov's assassinators, release of Eynulla Fatullayev and other arrested journalists.

The 15-minute rally passed without incident, APA reports.
