26 September 2006 [19:43] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan's Court of Grave Crimes continued the trial of the gang led by Haji Mammadov, former high ranking official of the Interior Ministry Crime Investigation Department.

Defendant Nizami Abdullayev testified upon the trial. Abdullayev was arrested in Russia on December 7, 2005. Saying that he is penitent for his crimes, Abdullayev said he informed about the crimes that are unknown to the investigation. The defendant said he has known Haji Mammadov since 1978 and they had friendly relations since 1986. "My first crime was kidnapping of Ilham Gadirzadeh. Haji said he did not return his debt."

Abdullayev denied the charge of kidnapping Javid Manafov. "I was not involved in the kidnapping of Javid. I was not working with Haji that time."

Testifying on the department chief of Office to Fight Narcotic Drugs Azer Ismayilov, Abdullayev said he was unaware of the talks on this case. "I was interrogated by the Khatayi district police office and Prosecutor's Office of Republic. They suspected Haji for that."

The defendant also testified on the murder of criminalist Rovshan Aliyev. "Haji and Rovsan were friends. One day Haji told me that Rovshan began to be more active in investigation of kidnapping. He ordered me to follow the criminalist after that. Several days later Haji said Rovshan Aliyev should be murdered. I protested and refused to be involved in that crime. Haji seemed to be unwilling too. I heard about the death of Rovshan from TV," Abdullayev said.

The defendant said after the murder of Rovshan Aliyev, he reported to Interior Minister for sending him into retirement and left for Donestsk, Ukraine without waiting for the reply, APA informs.
