Former police officer sentenced

Azerbaijan's Dashkesen region court ended the trial of former senior police officer Natig Afandiyev.

His lawyer Vugar Khasayev told the APA that witnesses testified and public prosecutor asked sentencing Afandiyev to five years in prison. The defendant's lawyer asked for discharging Afandiyev saying he is not guilty.

Judge Habib Hasanov sentenced Afandiyev to five years in prison.

Lawyer said he will appeal against the decision.

The ex-senior police officer was arrested in October last year facing the charges of attempt to coup d'etat, staging mass unrests and carrying guns illegally under article 228.2 of Criminal Code.
