Ulvi Bajarani claims under-12 title in Abu Dhabi

Azerbaijan's Fide Master Ulvi Bajarani won the under-12 title at the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival even before playing his last match.

The win also propelled him into a joint share of the lead in the Open Championship, with one round remaining.

Bajarani beat Filipino Axel John Valerio in the sixth round of the competition to increase his tally to 6 points. He will face compatriot Rahmili Sanan in the last round. Bajarani will emerge champion even if he loses the match because of the Swiss tie-breaker.

Sanan defeated India's Sudarshan Surya to collect 5 points as M.H. Vidhyasaagar from India defeated UAE's Daood Abdullah to increase his points to 5 while Vishnu Vijay, also from India, beat compatriot Shubam Bhandari for joint second place with five points.

Bajarani became one of the three players who shared the lead of the Open Championship with 7 points each, with a round remaining.

He defeated Britain's Nicholas de Peyer while former sole leader Jordanian Fadi Malkawi was forced to split the points with Woman FM Mona Salman from Iran.

Erkin Gurbanzade from Azerbaijan beat Danny Bacfazar from the Philippines to share the lead. Bahraini Ayyad Maher increased his tally to 6.5 points after beating India's T. Sajid to share second place with Mona.

In the Masters Championship all the top six matches of round seven have ended in draws. GM Gashimov Vugar from Azerbaijan, who drew with compatriot GM Rauf Mammadov, increased his tally to 5.5 points.
