Two-thirds of the world's imprisoned women are in only four countries: the United States, China, Russia, and Thailand, , APA reports.
The report shows there are 55,400 female prisoners in Russia but according to official statistics, one in twelve prisoners is female in Russia. The number of female prisoners increased by 38 percent as against 2000.
The statistics is the highest in Belarus (former Soviet country), at 7.5 percent. While some former Soviet states have more typical numbers, like Azerbaijan, at just 1.4 percent, Ukraine is "quite high" at 6.1 percent.
Azerbaijan has the lowest number of female prisoners in the CIS.
