Materials of crimes against Azerbaijanis in Chita submitted to court

The preliminary investigation on the case of Russians, who burnt houses and cars belonging to Azerbaijanis living in Kharagun village of Chita, Russia, has been completed.

As APA reports, Chita prosecutor's office has submitted the investigation materials to court. Kharagun resident Sergei Makov will first testify upon the trial on episode of national conflict.

The prosecutor's office says in its official report Sergei Makov set fire to the Mammadovs' house on 20 May this year. The militiamen near the house could extinguish the fire and arrest the culprit. Makov is facing the charges of committing arson aiming to damage other's property. He is expected to be sentenced to five years in jail if these charges are proved.

On May 17 this year, Azerbaijani Royal Yusifov came into conflict with local residents in Kharagun village.

The Russians beat Royal Yusifov and, he called other Azerbaijanis living in Kharagun for help. They beat those attacking to Royal Yusifov. In response to this, about 100 local Russians set fire to eight houses and five cars belonging to Azerbaijanis. 59-year-old Azerbaijani was injured in the clash and died in the hospital.

The culprits have been arrested. They are facing charges of manslaughter, damaging property and plundering.

About 89 Azerbaijanis were living in Kharagun. They engaged in wood business. After this even, Azerbaijanis began to collectively leave the village.
