13 July 2006 [01:09] - TODAY.AZ
On Wednesday human rights defenders Organizations Monitoring Group members-Saida Gojamanli, Novella Jafaroglu, Seadat Bananyarli and Chingiz Ganizade monitored Gobustan jail.

Gojamanli told APA that the aim of the monitoring is to acquaint with detention conditions and to make clear information on mass hunger strike in the jail.

"We acquainted ourselves with detention condition, none of the inmates complained and a prisoner showed us some bread provided for them. The bread was of the same quality as bread sold in shops in Baku."

She also said that they have met with prisoners going on strike on the demand of commutation of their sentence from life to 15 years.

"We thank Ministry of Justice that they allowed us to make clear this problem. We met any prisoner we want. 6 inmates were going on hunger strike. 4 of them were in medical unit and 2 in the ward. We suggested that they stop going on hunger strike and explained that every Azerbaijani citizen can now appeal to European Court. They can appeal to the court instead of going on hunger strike. Two of them promised to stop hunger strike. Four of them said that they will think over."

Human rights defenders were accompanied by Justice Ministry officers.
