Azeri envoy sued over alleged misconduct

06 July 2006 [11:26] - TODAY.AZ
The incident involving the Azeri consul-general in Istanbul Ibrahim Nabioghlu will be thoroughly studied, Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov has said.

The leading Turkish media have carried headlines saying that the diplomat had an affair with a female lawyer. The reports maintained that he had beaten and insulted the woman and that the case is now being heard in court.

"The Azeri Foreign Ministry is looking into the issue. First, the authenticity of the media reports will be examined. It is premature to say anything at this point. On the other hand, a possible recall of the consul is a prerogative of the head of state. The outcome of the scrutiny will be definitely reported to the president and he will make the final decision," the deputy minister told reporters.

According to AssA-Irada, Khalafov declined comment on any given media report concerning Nabioghlu. "This is not a plain issue, as a person's future is at stake. Therefore, we should exercise caution in reacting to such reports. Unfortunately, unsubstantiated publications appear both in the Turkish and Azerbaijani media today. From this standpoint, the developments should be assessed only after they are fully studied," Khalafov said.
