Mass action of prisoners delayed

12 June 2006 [13:17] - TODAY.AZ
Though 109 prisoners imprisoned for life time sentence informed on their starting hunger strike from today this action has been delayed.

According to APA, all of the prisoners have breakfast and none of them has applied to prisoner leadership with application on their starting hunger strike action. Right defender Zaliha Tahirova stated that she's against the hunger strike of prisoners.

According to her, prisoners should restore their rights through court than going on hunger strike: "We have joined European Convention, series of prominent contracts of Europe. These mechanisms should be put into operation. Applying to Court is more effective than hunger strike. Those prisoners do not intend writing application to defend their rights through court. Holding an action they want to be pardoned. But this is not reasonable way.

109 prisoners applying to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, last week informed on their starting hunger strike by June 12. They demand on their punishment term to be substituted with 15 year imprisonment.
