Prosecutor-General's press secretary Vugar Aliyev told APA that academic Eldar Salayev, who has been arrested facing the charges of attempting to stage a coup and mass unrests (articles 28.220.1 and 278 of Criminal Code), appealed to the Prosecutor-General for commuting his punishment as he has serious health problems.
"The arrest decision on Eldar Salayev has been commuted and he is provided with all conditions for treatment in Azerbaijan. The Health Ministry set a diagnosis of negative development of cataract in his eyes due to his age and the disease can be removed in the Eye Diseases Institute and other health establishments in the country. There are restrictions to free moving of the accused with arrest decision on them according to the legislation. However, as an exception to the rule, Prosecutor-General allowed Eldar Salayev to go abroad for treatment, taking into account his appeal to the head of state Ilham Aliyev, his hope for full treatment in a foreign country," the press secretary said.
The academic's son Elman Salayev told APA that his father will leave for the United States soon, "It will take some time to get a visa to America. We also need to consult to doctors before that."
