Ecology Minister: "Bird death cases decreased"

14 March 2006 [22:17] - TODAY.AZ
"Sick birds have migrated to Azerbaijan after the frost came to Russia and frosty weather in the north Caspian coast in mid-January," said Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyn Bagirov.

He noted that before there were no cases of bird death during the winter migration in Azerbaijan. In recent days bird death cases have decreased. Bagirov explained that fact by milder climate conditions. "Most of the birds have returned to Russia and Kazakhstan," he said.

He emphasized another aspect of that problem. “There are some species of birds that winters in the north of Africa, summers in Azerbaijan. We are looking forward for their arrival in our country. There is some information that some of the birds coming from Nigeria and some other African countries are sick," the Minister told Trend.

There are also rare cases of death among the non-migrating birds (sparrows and crows), the minister said, adding that relevant work in this direction was underway, stressing the importance of prophylactic measures.

According to him, more than 15.000 birds have died up to now. "Most of the death cases occurred on the territories of Khizi, Devechi, Khachmaz districts and Absheron peninsula," the minister said.
