The spread of bird flu in Italy is not a threat for Azerbaijan, the State Veterinary Service of the Azerbaijani Agriculture Ministry told Trend on Monday.
"Azerbaijan imports poultry and poultry products only from Turkey, the USA, Brazil and tribal eggs from Iran, Turkey and Bulgaria. That's why the bird flu outbreak in Italy does not threaten Azerbaijan," the State Veterinary Service spokesperson said.
The Veterinary Service has already received information about the virus and regulations to combat this from the Office International of Epizooties.
The outbreak of bird flu was recorded on August 21 in the Northern Italian region of Emilia Romagna by the local sanitary inspection. According to Itar-Tass, half a million of chickens were destroyed at a poultry farm in the vicinity of Mordano (province of Ravenna) last Wednesday.
A few days earlier such an operation was carried out at a farm in the town of Ostellato (Ferrara province) where 128,000 chickens were destroyed. Both farms belong to the same firm-producer San Paolo. The veterinary control on the ground was strengthened, disinfection carried out and quarantine announced within a radius of 10 kilometres around the enterprises.
