
A conference entitled "The well-being of children as an indicator for the well-being of society" was co-organized Tuesday by the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and PACE Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development.
The event was held as part of the ONE-in-FIVE campaign to stop sexual violence against children.
Opening the event, member of the Azerbaijani delegation to the PACE Sevinj Fataliyeva noted that protection of children was the priority of the policy of Azerbaijan. She noted that the parliament of Azerbaijan is going to ratify the CoE convention on protection of children. According to her, the control over violence against children, exploitation of children`s labour is executed by NGOs too.
Deputy Chairperson of the Milli Majlis Bahar Muradov noted that future of children was the future of any state and nation. The Government of Azerbaijan displays the sufficient determination in prevention of threats against children. The Parliament of Azerbaijan has passed some progressive laws on protection of children.
PACE rapporteur for combating sexual violence against children Sílvia Eloisa Bonet Perot noted that children are suffering the most from economic crisis, wars and conflicts. Having lost their parents, they face violence.
Chairman of the Milli Majlis social policy committee Hadi Rajabli underlined that national-spiritual and family values, which are more in cherished in Azerbaijan than in many of the European countries, curb the growth of sexual violence and exploitation of children. The Parliament of Azerbaijan has passed a law on domestic violence, which protects rights of children within families as well.
Deputy Chairman of the State Committee on Problems of Family, Children and Women Aynur Sofiyeva underlined that the Azerbaijani government has the strong political will to fight violence against children. The committee implements education projects in this respect.
