Peace Corps Azerbaijan holds swearing-in ceremony

 Peace Corps Azerbaijan has held the swearing-in ceremony for its 10th group of Volunteers.
Opening the ceremony, director of the Peace Corps Azerbaijan program Maisie Withington noted that Peace Corps volunteers would work in schools and organizations in 23 Azerbaijani regions, applying their knowledge, skills and experience to the development of Azerbaijani communities and organizations. The Peace Corps Azerbaijan Program was established in 2003.

Today the Peace Corps has three programs in Azerbaijan - 1) Community Economic Development; 2) Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL); 3) Youth Development. Since the first group arrived in the country, 261 Volunteers have served.

US ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Morningstar appealed the volunteers to share US values and practice with Azerbaijani youth.

In return of their service the volunteers will get familiarized with Azerbaijan`s rich culture, history and economy. The ambassador stressed the significance of participation of youth organization`s representatives in the swearing-in ceremonies.
Delivering a speech in the ceremony Deputy Ministers of education Gulu Novruzov and Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Intigam Babayev praised the Peace Corps` activity and wished them success in future.

After the speeches the volunteers were sworn in. Peace Corps is an U.S. Government organization established in 1961 by former U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Peace Corps builds peace and friendship by helping people of developing countries build their skills and knowledge by sending qualified Americans, and to promote a better understanding between different countries through cultural exchange. Since then, nearly 200,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 139 countries around the world.
