Over 1.000 quakes recorded in Azerbaijan

01 June 2012 [11:27] - TODAY.AZ
Over 1.000 earthquakes have been recorded in Azerbaijan this year , 19 of which were feelable.

Head of Republican Center of Seismologic Service Gurban Yetirmishli has reported that the earthquake in Zagatala was forecasted an hour and a half in advance as extreme land tension was observed in this zone.

" It is impossible to exactly forecast the earthquake. The same equipment used in Japan, the USA and other seismic active zones is used in Azerbaijan as well but it is extremely difficult to exactly forecast time and date of the earthquake. The last earthquake in Zagatala was equal in force to the one occurring in Italy , but fortunately no death cases were recorded in Azerbaijan, whereas 10 people died in Italy. The cause of it was efficient reaction of employees of Emergency Situation Ministry’s bases in Sheki, Gabala and other regions who ensured safety of local population through timely deliver and installation of tents in which Zagatala residents were relocated from their half destroyed houses ",- he noted.

According to G. Yetirmishli Azerbaijan has always had and will have different magnitude earthquakes and relevant bodies are ready for that.

" Land tension is observed in a number of regions and these are natural processes in the earth crust, land shifts are possible which regularly happen all over the world ",- he said.
