New Eurovision project starts in Azerbaijan

A new project in the Eurovision format was presented on Tuesday.

The main objective of the Univision project is to lay foundations for a new tradition.

Head of Press Service of the Ministry of Youth and Sport Samaya Mamedova noted at the ceremony that the project, supported by the Ministry is a singing contest in the format of Eurovision, which takes place among the universities.

Mamedova added that the singing contest, which will be attended by 26 universities, will consist of two stages.

The project is implemented by Azerbaijan Students' Union.

Chairman of the Board Shahin Ismayilov said the semi-finals of the competition will be held on May 15 and final on May 17 at Heydar Aliyev Palace.

Ten teams will compete at the final stage, Ismayilov said.

Ismayilov said the voting will be conducted in accordance with the format of Eurovision. University, first place winner will be awarded and will be entitled to carry out the next contest.

Students have proposed to conduct this contest and it has been discussed during three years.

"We have decided to implement this project. This year's competition will be held in Azerbaijan, but we will later introduce it to Europe and the CIS. European Union students showed great interest in this contest and will send a special delegation to the competition," Ismayilov said.

He also stressed that the songs in the competition this year will be in different languages, but after introduction of the competition in Europe and in the CIS, songs will be performed in either mother language or in English.
