More than 20 cinemas operated in Baku during the Soviet period, but today their number has dropped to 4-5. There were cinemas such as J.Jabbarli, Pioneer, Savalan, Shafag, Tabriz, October, Nizami , April 28, Galaba, Shusha, N. Narimanov, Dostlug, Shimshek, Sunrise, Bilik, Sevil, Baku, Moscow, Araz, Vatan, Tower, Peace, Khazar , etc in Baku.
Today, many of them were closed or privatized or demolished. And the Araz cinema located in the center of Baku is one of them. The Azerbaijani Culture and Tourism ministry, when asked about the fate of the cinema, reported that the cinema was removed from the ministry’s balance and privatized. So, the ministry lacks any information about the future of this facility.
But, the Day.Az was able to find out that the facility will further operate as a cinema after the major overhaul. As it was reported, movies will be shown in new format here. But, the facility will not be used only as the cinema, the source reported not providing further information about. The overhaul is expected to be completed by late 2012.
