Bridge collapses on Baku-Guba-Russia highway - UPDATE - PHOTOS

Azerbaijan's Transport Minister  Ziya Mammadov inspected the collapsed bridge over Garachay River on the 156th km of Baku-Guba-Russia highway.

APA’s local bureau reports that the minister told journalists that reasons of accident are being investigated and the public will be informed about it.

Mammadov estimates the accident as natural disaster and said that the person wounded during the collapse will be rendered financial assistance and alternative road will be constructed.

A part of the bridge over Garachay River on the 156th km of Baku-Guba-Russia highway has crashed down today. GAZel truck fell into Garachay River as a result of bridge collapse. GAZel’s driver, resident of Guba region’s Igrig village, Ulfat Hasanov, born in 1972 was wounded and hospitalized. Traffic was stopped on the bridge.

One of the main causes of collapse of a bridge over the Garachay River in 156 kilometer of highway Baku-Guba-Russia border was extraction of river stone on this section, which is used by construction companies for their work, a source in JSC Azeryolservis of the Azerbaijani Transport Ministry told Trend on Wednesday.

He said at present heads and specialists of JSC are on the scene. Drivers have to use an alternative road through Khachmaz before the restoration of the bridge.

With regard to terms of restoration of the bridge, the source said that it is still impossible to talk about it.

"Everything will be clear after it will de determined who carry out this work," he said.

At present, car movement on this highway is temporarily suspended.
