When should journalists retire?

In Azerbaijan, as well as in several other countries, retirement of journalists after 20 years of work is impossible, according to the Press Council (SC).

"Journalism is one of the most difficult professions, but there is no such practice in Azerbaijan, in order to make a difference in the law by profession," member of the board of joint venture, editor in chief of "Azerbaijan", MP Bakhtiyar Sadikhov told Trend.

Sadikhov said journalists in Azerbaijan, as well as all citizens have equal rights.

"After Azerbaijan joined the Council of Europe, the legislative policy of the republic lies in the fact that all laws were brought into line with EU standards and international standards. It means that the Parliament of Azerbaijan before the adoption of a law sends it to the EU, where it passes the examination. When Azerbaijan became a member of the Council of Europe, he made a commitment that all legislative acts adopted in the country, will meet the standards of the Council of Europe" Sadikhov said.

There is no such practice in Azerbaijan when everybody retires after 25 year of work and advantage provided for journalists and they retire after 20 years of work, Sadikhov added.

"In general, one of the recommendations and the requirement of CE is the abolition of benefits and privileges. Therefore, whether we like it or not, the retirement of journalists after 20 years of work is impossible." Sadikhov said.
