Georgia, Armenia still pollute transboundary rivers

The National Monitoring Department for Environment of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR) implemented the next monitoring for the purpose of review of the contamination level of Kura and Aras transboundary rivers, as well as transboundary tributaries of them.

Water consumption in Kura river held 137 m3/sec in the second decade of February, decreasing 5 m3/sec in relation to the first decade of February. According to the results of the monitorings, the amount of bio substances in Kura river was considerably more than norm due to domestic wastes and slops of industrial enterprises discharged directly to water objects without purification from the territories of Georgia and Armenia. Phenols and copper compounds as specific contaminants in the water composition exceeded the admissible turbidity level

. In this regard, phenols and copper compounds surpassed the admissible turbidity level quadruple and thrice in Shikli-2 settlement, and Agstafachay reservoir respectively, and thrice in Agstafachay settlement. According to the outcomes of the monitorings carried out in the second decade of February, phenols and copper compounds outnumbered the admissible turbidity level four times and thrice in Horadiz settlement, thrice and quadruple in I Shahsevan settlement, while four times and twice in Bahramtapa settlement respectively concerning Aras river.

The water oxygen regime oscillated within the sanitary norm in all settlements containing 6.41-7.05 mg/l.
