Baku marks World Cancer Day

Azerbaijan office of United Nations Department of Public Information (UN DPI), Park Bulvar trade and rest center and Azerbaijan Doctors and Students Public Union have conducted a social campaign to mark the World Cancer Day.

Attending the event UN DPI representative in Azerbaijan Envera Selimovic spoke of the history and goals of the World Cancer Day. Selimovic pointed out that this year`s theme is “Together it is possible!”. The creation of the theme was inspired by the thought of cutting down 25% of the total rate of premature deaths brought by cancer until 2025 through the combined efforts of every individual, organization, government agencies and NGOs.

UN DPI expert Vafa Safarli underlined that according to WHO each year over 7 million people die of cancer and 20 million people live with cancer diagnosis. She said cancer rates will double by 2030. Safarli said the aim of the event is to raise awareness of the people on the disease.
