
About 175,400 children were born in Azerbaijan last year. This is the highest index for the last 17 years, the State Statistics Committee told Trend on Wednesday. The birth rate per 1,000 people increased from 18.5 to 19.4 compared to 2010. So, 53.8 percent of newborn are boys, 46.2 percent - girls. About 1,506 twins and 33 triplets
were born last year.
The most common names given to boys in 2011 - Yusif, Ali, Husein, Muhammad, Murad and Nihad, girls - Zehra, Nuray, Fatima, Fidan, Zeyneb and Ayan.
According to the preliminary data, as of January 1, 2012 the Azerbaijani population has increased by 123,900 (1.4 percent) and has reached 9 million 235 people. About 53 percent of the population lives in cities, 47 percent - in villages. About 49.6 percent of the population falls to males, women - 50.4 percent. About 1,017 women account for every 1,000 men.
