The captain of the
Turkish ship that sank in the territorial waters of Albania is from
Azerbaijan and has been named as Khayyam Mammadov, Azerbaijan State
Maritime Administration reported.
The total number of Azerbaijani sailors who are missing along with the captain is four, according to the administration. "The crash is being investigated at the moment and the Azerbaijani
side will receive all the details after that period." a spokesman said.
Imranov Arif, Safa Ibragimov and Ramil Melikov were the other Azerbaijanis.in the crew. The remaining two sailors are Georgian. "Twelve crew members who were saved are currently in hospitals" the administration said.
The Turkish tanker Edirne sank after an explosion in the cargo hold
on January 15, three miles from Durres, Albania, on the Adriatic Sea.
The tanker unloaded more than 3000 tons of fuel in Durres and was
leaving the harbour.
Tanker Edirne IMO 7704291 has deadweight of 4112 tons and was built
in 1980 flying a flag of Sierra Leone. The operator is SAYGI DENIZCILIK
VE ELEKTRIK.
***** 11:00Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry is investigating death of one and fate of injured Azerbaijani sailors on the Turkish tanker sunken near the Albanian port of Durres, the country's Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev reported on Monday.
The Ministry has instructed the Azerbaijani Embassy in Greece, accredited also to Albania, to deal with clarifying details of this accident and the Azerbaijani sailors' fate. The Turkish tanker with an Azerbaijani citizen on board sank in the Albanian port of Durres as a result of explosion, Turkish Samanyolu Haber news portal reported.
The accident killed the captain of the ship - Azerbaijani citizen and two Georgian citizens. There were three other Azerbaijani, three Turkish, six Georgian, and two Ukrainian citizens on board, Turkish media outlets reported.
The causes of the explosion are being investigated.
