World’s tallest building may appear in Baku

Azerbaijan has officially confirmed its plans on construction of the tallest building in the world. It will consist of 185 floors.

Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijani State Committee for Construction & Architecture of Dovlethan Dovlethanov informed that local investor Haji Ibrahim announced plans to build the world’s tallest building in Baku suburban settlement Sahil (former Primorsk).

"The investor has already hired an individual architect, who designed the initial sketch of the project saying also of coverage of offshore zone in addition to the coastal area, where construction of artificial islands is planned," Dovlethanov said.

He points out that so far the Committee did not receive an official request from the potential developer. "Technically, the construction of such a project and the building of 185 floors in Baku settlement Sahil is possible. More precise information will be provided after full development of the project to be reviewed by specialists of the State Committee and the Expertise Department of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Azerbaijan," Dovlethanov said.

A Ministry’s source says that implementation of such project in Baku is technically possible, but it is a question is it is needed it at all. Azerbaijan has rich experience in building of artificial islands. Back in 1925 for oil production it was backfilled so-called "Lenin’s Cove". If the project of Ibrahim is implemented, the Baku (Sahil) skyscraper will be taller than the tallest buildings of the world - Burj Al Arab in Dubai.
