Turkey seeks new transit routes after Syria halt

08 December 2011 [15:37] - TODAY.AZ
Turkish Customs and Trade Minister Hayati Yazici said that they were working on options for Turkish transit transportation following a Syrian decision to suspend a free trade agreement with Turkey.

Speaking to reporters in the Turkish capital of Ankara, Hayati Yazici said that "one of the options involved Ro-Ro trips from Iskenderun to Aqaba and Mersin to Alexandria to carry Turkish products to the Gulf countries."

"Another alternative involves opening the Ovakoy and Aktepe border gates to the west of the Habur Border Gate along the Turkish-Iraqi border. We are working to build a second bridge parallel to the existing bridge at Habur so as to ease the transportation traffic," Yazici also said.
