Iran assures better protection for embassies

07 December 2011 [13:03] - TODAY.AZ
Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in an interview with leading German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung promised better protection for embassies, New York Times reported. "This will not recur," Salehi said.He called the attack on the UK Embassy and a residential compound on Nov. 30 "unlawful actions".

It should be recalled that on Nov.29 a group of protesters broke away from a crowd of a few hundred outside the main British embassy compound in Tehran, scaled the gates, broke the locks and went inside. Protesters lowered the British flag, burned it and put up the Iranian flag instead. Police arrived in the scene to suppress the demonstrators in front of the main embassy compound, but later clashed with protesters and fired tear gas to try to disperse them. Following the protests near the embassy, ambassadors from both UK and Iran were recalled.
