Four Turks die in Bulgarian motorway crash

Four Turkish citizens were killed, including a child, and four were injured on a Bulgarian motorway Monday when their van swerved onto the opposite lane and crashed into a truck, Bulgarian police said, dpa reported.

Their minivan was registered in Germany and was bound for Turkey. It crashed at Haskovo, in southern Bulgaria, on the main motorway towards Istanbul. No other details were released.

Bulgarian roads are notoriously dangerous owing to their poor condition, old cars and reckless driving which often claims multiple fatalities.

Tens of thousands of Turks who work in western Europe seasonally drive home along these roads, often without proper rest along the way, adding to the general danger.

An average of more than 1,000 people have died annually in traffic accidents in Bulgaria over the past two decades.
