Nine killed in clash between Turkish army and Kurdish militia

26 September 2011 [11:28] - TODAY.AZ
Nine people were killed late Saturday when a Kurdish separatist militia attacked a Turkish police station, authorities said Sunday, DPA reported.

Armed members of the Kurdistan Workders' Party (PKK) attacked the station in the Pervari district of Siirt province. Six police officers were killed and 11 injured while security forces killed three of the attackers.

The PKK is classified as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union. The group has been fighting for an independent Kurdish state since the 1980s and also operates in northern Iraq.

Kurdish organizations accuse the government in Ankara of systematic discrimination against Kurds.
