Former Georgian speaker's driver sentenced to 12 years in prison

The driver of a car in the motorcade of the former speaker of the Georgian Parliament, leader of the opposition People's Assembly Nino Burjanadze during the events in the night of May 26 was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Shakria Zurashvili was accused of crimes under part 2 of article 353 and part 3 of article 117 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, a source in the city court of Tbilisi said.

It deals with the events that occurred in Rustaveli Avenue of Tbilisi in the night of May 26, when a protest action was prevented. According to the Interior Ministry, the escort of the leader of the "Democratic Movement - United Georgia" Nino Burjanadze hit a police officer who died on the scene.

As for five other persons detained in connection with the incident, four of them have been sentenced to three to four years in prison, and the trial continues in regard to the fifth.

Recently Burjanadze stated that the involvement of drivers in the death of the policeman and one citizen has not been confirmed.
