Iranian parliament demands UN Security Council to intervene in events in UK

18 August 2011 [13:51] - TODAY.AZ
Some 239 Iranian parliamentarians signed a declaration demanding the UN Security Council to intervene in events in the UK, Mehr news agency reported.

The declaration’s authors criticized the UK leadership and called for demonstrations’ suppression as "pernicious events to all of mankind".

Parliamentarians will send a declaration to other international organizations, including the UN Human Rights Council, to draw their attention to events in Great Britain.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the British charge d'affaires, informing him about "Iran's deep concerns about the violent behavior of the UK government towards protestors".
Iran asked the UK for recognition and to heed the "protestors' real demands".

On Aug. 9, Iran's Parliament claimed that it would seriously review the issue of closing the UK Embassy in Tehran in case the violent crackdown on British citizens continued.
Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast also called on British police to end the confrontations.

The UK unrest began on Aug. 6, in the north London suburb of Tottenham, after a few hundred people gathered outside a police station to protest against 29-year-old Mark Duggan's fatal shooting and killing.

Duggan was killed while resisting police who were trying to detain him.
