PKK terrorist group's number two detained in Iran - agency

The second person in the leadership of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) terrorist group - Murat Karayilan has been detained in Iran, Anadolu news agency reported Sunday, citing the statement of the Iranian parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi.

According to Boroujerdi, Karayilan was detained by Iranian intelligence officers.

Turkish channel TRT Haber reported about the Karayilan's arrest in Iran as early as Saturday. However, later the TV channel said that the report wasn't officially confirmed.

Listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, the banned PKK took up arms in 1984 to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey. Some 40,000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the PKK in the past over two decades.
