Opposition demands Georgian ombudsman to fix position on eviction of refugees

12 August 2011 [09:00] - TODAY.AZ
The action "I am also a refugee" was held yesterday in front of the office of the Ombudsman of Georgia. Gathered for the action, the refugees and representatives of opposition demand the Ombudsman Giorgi Tugushi to fix his position on the eviction process of refugees from the Hotel "Abkhazia".

Eviction of refugees will be carried out on Aug. 15, as they are officially notified. The hotel is now home for up to 700 refugees. A renovated building in Rustavi is offered for them as accommodation.

The action organizers believe that the Ombudsman should not have a "silent" position on this "illegality" as the eviction of refugees.

But the protesters could not meet with the Ombudsman, who is not in Tbilisi now. They met with the representative of the office and were secured a promise that upon his return to Tbilisi, Tugushi will meet with them.

Such actions are systematically conducted in front of different offices.

Military actions were launched in the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia in August 2008. Georgian troops entered Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia. Later Russian troops occupied the city, driving the Georgian military back to Georgia. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on Aug. 26, and established diplomatic relations with the regions on Sept. 9, 2008.
