Armenian ðolice used violence against young oppositionists

The active members of the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) - Tigran Arakelyan, Sahak Muradyan, Areg Gevorgyan, Sargis Gevorgyan, David Kiramijy6an and Vahagn Gevorgyan - who were beaten up by policemen and brought to the Center police department on Aug. 9, are still in custody there, Tret.am reported.

Talking to Tert.am, Arman Musnyan, Spokesman for ANC Chairman Levon Ter-Petrosyan, said that the young men were taken to isolation wards "to be subjected to violence."

An incident involving the ANC members and policemen occurred after the young men approached the field officers who were checking some citizens' documents. The young men demanded that the policemen explain their actions. However, the policemen assaulted the ANC members and brought them to the police station.

The Haykakan Zhamanak daily reports that the emergency doctors that arrived at the police station said all the detainees had concussion of the brain.
