A prison for those convicted of drug-related crimes is under construction in Tehran, Iranian Fars news agency quotes the Head of the country’s Prisons Organization Gholam-Hossein Esmaili as saying.

He said the prison’s construction is close to completion. It will be in use by December.

Half of Irani prisoner arrests have been because of drug-related crimes. According to Iranian media outlets, at present there are 150,000 prisoners in the country’s prisons.

The number of prisoners in Iran is higher than the general average in Asian and world countries. Some 200 prisoners account for every 100,000 people in Iran. This figure is 140 in Asia. Some 184 prisoners account for every 100,000 people in the world, on average.
