Iran, Pakistan urge firm anti-terror bid

28 March 2011 [10:34] - TODAY.AZ
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has lashed out at certain countries which spread terrorism to "dominate the world," saying Iran and Pakistan are both victims of terrorism, Press TV reported.

"The Pakistani government is making its utmost efforts to fight against terrorism, but the main cause of terrorism is certain countries which are interested in dominating the world," President Ahmadinejad said in a Saturday meeting with Pakistani Speaker of the National Assembly Fahmida Mirza, who is in the Iranian capital, Tehran, to attend the International Nowruz Celebrations.

"Those who are not interested in the independence of countries such as Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan, are making efforts to obtain their ominous goals through spreading terrorism," Ahmadinejad was quoted by IRNA as saying.

The Iranian chief executive said Tehran-Islamabad relations are not based on "temporary and changeable" policies and stressed the importance of bolstering cooperation in various fields.

He pointed out that Iran and Pakistan enjoy a "common culture, beliefs, traditions and ideals" and added that Nowruz was an appropriate opportunity for countries to explore ways to strengthen cooperation.

The Pakistani speaker, for her part, urged regional countries to beef up efforts to fight against terrorism.

Islamabad blames the unauthorized US drone strikes on Pakistan's tribal areas for the rise in anti-US sentiment and growing militancy in the region.

Mirza went on to say that Nowruz was an opportunity for Muslim countries to exchange views on different events.
