Georgia to require Russia to commit non-use of force at Geneva talks

03 March 2011 [16:37] - TODAY.AZ
The Georgian side will raise three major issues at the 15th round of the Geneva talks. The Georgian delegation will demand Russia to commit to the non-use of force, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergi Kapanadze said at a briefing.

Russia's position in this matter, the essence of which lies in the fact that Georgia must sign such an agreement with Sukhumi and Tskhinvali, is not acceptable for Georgia, Kapanadze said.

The second requirement for Russia is the deployment of international security arrangements in the occupied territories. Kapanadze said this means the deployment of international peacekeeping and police forces in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali. He said this, first and foremost, concerns the EU observers.

The third requirement is the issue of refugees.

"In particular, our delegation will demand the return of refugees to their homes. Concrete steps must be taken in this direction. We hope that the Russians will take a decision at least at this meeting and an agreement will be reached," Kapanadze said.

He said the delegation will also discuss the release of prisoners. The Georgian side has also called on the Russian side to cooperate in combating terrorism.

The Georgian delegation will leave for Geneva today and the next meeting will be held on March 4.
