Iranian army to develop new generation of smart bombs

12 January 2011 [11:37] - TODAY.AZ
A senior Iranian Army official said that the country is working on a new generation of 2,000-pound (900 kg) smart bombs to boost their range.

Speaking to FNA, Deputy Head of the Iranian Air Force Self-Sufficiency Jihad and Industrial Researches (department) General Mohammad Reza Karashki said that his department is due to develop the third generation of Qassed (Messenger) smart bombs in the near future.

"The third generation of Qassed smart bombs will be equipped with engines and its range will be increased to over 100 km," Karashki noted.

He announced that the second generation of these types of bombs with a range of 50-km has already been built and will be mass-produced in the near future.

The Iranian Army's Air Force announced in September 2009 that it has successfully test-fired Qassed 1and 2, in aerial drills over the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Last march, Iranian Air Force Commander Brigadier General Hassan Shahsafi reminded the capabilities of the Iran-made smart bombs, including high-precision and destruction power, and told FNA at the time that Qassed 2 has a longer range than its primary version.

He also said that Qassed 1 has already been mass-produced and delivered to the Iranian Air Force.
