Donald Trump sensationally won the White House race this morning and Hillary Clinton phoned him at 2.30am to concede she had lost.
Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States on Tuesday in a stunning culmination of an explosive, populist and polarizing campaign that took relentless aim at the institutions and long-held ideals of American democracy.
The surprise outcome, defying late polls that showed Hillary Clinton with a modest but persistent edge, threatened convulsions throughout the country and the world, where skeptics had watched with alarm as Mr. Trump’s unvarnished overtures to disillusioned voters took hold, the New York Times reported.
Mr. Trump’s win — stretching across the battleground states of Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania — seemed likely to set off financial jitters and immediate unease among international allies, many of which were startled when Mr. Trump in his campaign cast doubt on the necessity of America’s military commitments abroad and its allegiance to international economic partnerships.
“We will double our growth and have the strongest economy in the world,” the Guardian reported quoting President-elect Donald Trump. “At the same time, we will get along with all other nations willing to get along with us.”
“America will no longer settle for anything less than the best,” Trump noted. “We must reclaim our country’s destiny, and dream big, and bold and daring. I want to tell the world community that while we will always put America’s interests first, we will deal fairly with everyone.”
“And now, I’d like to take this moment to thank some of the people who really helped me,” he said.
Trump won with votes 274 in the electoral college - the winner is the first to achieve 270. He is also winning in the popular vote by a more than one per cent margin.
Clinton had just 218 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win when Trump's victory emerged, Daily Mail reported .
