OIC hails Israel-Palestine truce

Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu welcomed the achievement a brokering a truce between Israel and Palestine, which stopped military operations against the Gaza Strip, the organisation's press release says.

Ihsanoglu also thanked Egypt for its efforts to achieve the truce and expressed the hope that the Gaza Strip blockade will be lifted as a result.

The truce was achieved through the US-Egyptian mediation and came into force from 21:00 on Wednesday. It stopped the Israeli operation 'Pillar of Cloud', launched in response to the frequent rocket attacks into Israel and lasted a week as remote attacks were launched on hundreds of targets in the Palestinian enclave. More than 160 Palestinians were killed as a result of the operation, most of whom were civilians.
