Ombudsman's power officially terminated in georgia

13 November 2012 [20:00] - TODAY.AZ
The Georgian parliament has officially terminated the powers of the Public Defender of Georgia - Ombudsman Giorgi Tugushi. This decision was taken on Tuesday at a special parliamentary session.

The parliament will discuss the nomination and elect a new ombudsman during this month. It is assumed that Georgian Dream favourite Nina Hatiskatsi, who previously worked in the human rights organisation Open Society - Georgia, but was fired because of disagreements with the management, will be elected to this position.

Her husband is a Georgian Dream activist and was even in prison under the previous government.

The public sector of Georgia which had offered five different candidates to the post of Ombudsman doesn't like the intentions of the new party. The NGO sector believes that the new authorities prefer to act as the previous ones in this matter, preferring to elect an unopposed ombudsman.
