NATO warns Syria

04 October 2012 [12:11] - TODAY.AZ
NATO on Wednesday called on Syria to immediately end its "aggressive acts" against NATO member Turkey, pledging its full support to Ankara, DPA reported.

"In the spirit of indivisibility of security and solidarity deriving from the Washington Treaty, the alliance continues to stand by Turkey and demands the immediate cessation of such aggressive acts against an ally," NATO said in a statement following an emergency meeting of its ambassadors.

It also urged "the Syrian regime to put an end to flagrant violations of international law," as all of its members "strongly condemned" a Syrian shelling that killed five people in Turkey.

The alliance described the "Syrian regime's recent aggressive acts" on the borders of NATO's territory as "a flagrant breach of international law and a clear and present danger to the security of one of its allies."
