Iranian diplomats expelled from Canada return home

13 September 2012 [13:55] - TODAY.AZ
Iranian diplomats expelled from Canada arrived with their families to Iran on Thursday morning, Fars agency reported.

On Sept. 7, dpa reported quoting Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird that country's Embassy in Tehran has been closed, and all Iranian diplomats are being expelled from Canada.

Baird said that the Iranian regime had shown "blatant disregard" for the Vienna convention and its guarantee of protecting diplomatic personnel.

In the statement posted on the Foreign Ministry's website, Baird also cited Iran's military assistance for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and defiance of UN resolutions that it must come clean about its nuclear programme.

Iran's Foreign Ministry's spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said earlier that Canada was compromising its own national interests by closing its embassy in Iran.

According to Mehmanparast, Canada's move was hasty, careless, driven by amateur psychology, and without any particular reasons.

On Sept. 10, Iranian Foreign Ministry said it has established special staff that would be dealing with issues of Iranians that currently reside in Canada.

According to Iran's Organization for Civil Registration, currently there are some 410,000 Iranians living in Canada.

Last week Canada stated Iran can establish Interests Section of the Islamic Republic in Canada.
