U.S. - Georgia ties mulled

Georgian Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili and members of the U.S. interagency delegation led by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Thomas Melia have discussed today situation before the parliamentary elections in Georgia.

According to the prime minister's office, the parties also discussed the readiness of relevant structures for the parliamentary elections on October 1.

The prime minister briefed the guests on the government's plans to ensure security in the election.

The U.S. delegation arrived in Tbilisi on September 10 and will be here until September 13. The delegation includes representatives of the Agency for International Development, the Department of Defense and Department of Justice.

Deputy Secretary of State and members of the delegation will hold a series of meetings during which the delegation will call on the Government of Georgia to abide by all the rules of electoral law impartially and transparently, and will urge the political parties to engage actively in this process and to comply with the law.

On Thursday, Melia will summarize the results of the visit and will assess the pre-election situation in Georgia.
