Turkish soldier killed in clashes with PKK terrorists

14 July 2012 [10:10] - TODAY.AZ
A soldier was killed and several others were wounded in a clash with a group of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists in the Kato Mountains of ??rnak province, Today's Zaman reported.

Air-backed operations are continuing in the region after several special operation units were deployed to the scene of the clash.

The PKK, which is fighting for autonomy in Turkey's mainly Kurdish Southeast, was founded on Marxist ideology. Turkey has been conducting airstrikes on PKK camps in Iraq's northern mountains and inside of Turkey since August of last year, following an increase in attacks on Turkish troops and civilians by the PKK.

The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives. The group is labeled a terrorist organization by the European Union and the United States, which has supplied Predator drones to assist Turkey.
