Georgia beings to eliminate effects of recent floods

Work is being implemented to eliminate the effects of floods in the towns of western and eastern Georgia. Streets and homes in the cities of Kutaisi, Batumi and Gurjaani that were flooded yesterday due to heavy rains.

The rain started early in the morning of July 10 and flooded the streets and homes in Batumi and Kutaisi.

The lower floors of apartment buildings were flooded in Gurjaani. Rescue teams are pumping out water and are clearing the streets. The town's crops are destroyed as are those in the surrounding villages.

Part of central Gurjaani - Tbilisi highway was flooded. Power lines in many areas are damaged and the water supply is cut.

The weather improved slightly this morning which allowed a clear up operation to start in all the towns affected by flooding. Heavy equipment is being used to assist in the work.

Meanwhile, weather forecasters warn about the continuation of the unstable weather until the weekend.
